The Samburu National Reserve is a game reserve on the banks of the Ewaso nyiro river in Kenya. On the other side of the river is the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The park is 165 km² in size and is situated 350 kilometres from Nairobi. It ranges in altitude from 800 to 1230 m above sea level.Geographically, it is located in Samburu County.
In the middle of the reserve, the Ewaso Ng'iro flows through doum palm groves and thick riverine forests. It provides water, without which the game in this arid region could not survive.
This circuit is less visited due to its remote location in the north laikipia.
However, visitors are rewarded by untouched wilderness, great wildlife densities and safari experience away from some of Kenya's busier parks.
Striking volcanic mountains backdrop the park and scattered across Samburus semi arid plains between red dust and shrubbery are large granite rocky outcrops, tall acacias and deep craters.
Meandering through the heart of the park is the Ewaso Nyiro River . A green oasis of the large doum palms and lush vegetation line the banks , breaking from the otherwise arid ecosystem and is a vital haven for wildlife.
Samburu is home to the rare northern special five :Grevy zebras ,Somali ostrich,reticulated Giraffe,Gerenuk,and the Beisa Oryx.
Large elephant herds,endangered wild dogs and the big cats are also found in high densities.
Birdlife is abundant with over 450 recorded species like the Lesser kestrel, Vulturine guinea fowl, and the Taita falcon.
